Cookie Disclosure
Last updated: May 2026
This page describes how the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) public website uses cookies and similar browser technologies. It reflects how the site is built today (a Next.js application hosted on CSME infrastructure).
Cookie notice and browser storage
When you first visit, you may see a short notice at the bottom of the screen. Dismissing it is saved in browser local storage (not a cookie) under the key csme_cookie_consent_v1, so we do not keep asking on every visit.
Clearing site data or local storage for this site will reset the notice. You can also use your browser’s privacy or site-data settings to remove stored values.
Cookies we set on this website
On the CSME site domain, we use the following first-party cookie for normal browsing:
site_locale— Stores your display language choice (enorfr) when you use the language control. It uses path/, a long-lived expiry (about one year), andSameSite=Lax. Our servers read this cookie so server-rendered content and the HTMLlangattribute can match your preference on the next request.
Server logs
Like any website, our servers may record standard technical data (for example, in access logs) as described in our Privacy Policy. We do not load third-party marketing or analytics scripts on the public site.
Administrators (site admin area only)
If you sign in to the CSME admin interface on this site, a short-lived first-party cookie named sidebar_state may be used to remember navigation sidebar layout (open or collapsed). This is not set for regular public visitors who do not use the admin tools.
Third-party sites linked from CSME
Many membership, sign-in, donation, and application flows link out to Yapla-hosted pages on Yapla’s own domain. When you leave our site and use those pages, Yapla may set and use cookies under its own policies. We do not embed Yapla login inside our domain for general browsing.
Newsletter signup on this site is submitted through our own API. As noted elsewhere on the site, communications may be processed with MailChimp (or comparable tools) as described in our Privacy Policy.
Other browser storage (examples)
Some pages may use local storage for draft content or admin-only conveniences (for example, saving a form draft while you work). These are limited in scope and are not used to replace the cookie consent preference key described above.
Managing cookies and storage
Most browsers let you block or delete cookies and site data. If you block first-party cookies entirely, features that depend on them (such as remembering language between visits) may not work until you allow cookies again for this site.
